New Buffalo High School artists stretched their creative brain muscles with this QUACK-TACULAR drawing challenge!
Each table group of students was given a rubber duck still life to arrange and compose in an unusual situation of their choice. The inspiration for this project was based on the work of contemporary artist, Florentijn Hofman, who is best known for his playful urban installations that portray animals scaled up to larger-than-life proportions.
Hofman's "Rubber Duck" series is made of giant inflatable yellow duck sculptures that have been floating around the world for years as pop-up exhibits. Most recently, the ducks made their appearance in Hong Kong this summer and just three weeks ago they floated off to the coast of Belfast Harbor, Maine.
My students were fascinated with this peculiar story from current events and were excited to brainstorm ideas for the challenge.
By creating their artwork from a physical rubber duck instead of a photo on their screens, students were able to practice their observational drawing skills with proportion, scale, perspective, and value to best represent these squeaky toys with big eyes and duck lips.
I gave my high school students creative freedom on media for this challenge with their choice of colored pencils, pastels, or watercolor.
I even had one student who created a pop-up for his artwork!
The artwork speaks for itself, but the creativity of these artists is just simply QUACK-TASTIC!
