New Buffalo Middle and High School art students created "I Voted" stickers in celebration of Constitution Day and the upcoming election. As President Lincoln once said, "Elections belong to the people." Exercising the right to vote is how American citizens have a voice in our democracy so that the government remains of the people, by the people, and for the people (Abraham Lincoln, The Gettysburg Address,1863).
My students were given this mini challenge to contribute to their community with their own original designs. Each student had creative freedom with their sticker theme as long as their design had a nonpartisan and positive message.
Students brainstormed ideas and reflected on how "I Voted" stickers could bring people together:
"We might all have different opinions, but we can all agree on coming together for the elections to vote and make our choice for America." (9th Grade Student)
“I voted stickers can be an equalizer for many people who have different beliefs or opinions." (12th Grade Student)
"The “I Voted” stickers can bring people together because they don’t show who they voted for, just that they participated. It connects people because there isn’t any difference between the voting groups, they all get a sticker." (9th Grade Student)
"I Voted stickers might remind some people it's time to vote and encourage them get out and vote!" (10th Grade Student)
Students uploaded their completed designs to their online portfolios on Artsonia where they each created a title and artist statement describing their artwork.
These are a few of the "I Voted" designs that middle and high school students created:
Left to Right: Boston Tea Party (8th Grade), Fish, I voted. (9th Grade ), Home Run (7th Grade)

The stickers were also a featured exhibit on display in the PAC commons area for the school activities on Constitution Day:
The stickers will be donated to the City of New Buffalo and New Buffalo Township for community members to wear when they vote on Election Day! 🇺🇸
"Maybe our "I Voted" stickers will encourage people in New Buffalo to vote because they can get a cool sticker." (10th Grade Student)
