New Buffalo Artists in the Michigan K-12 State Show

New Buffalo artists in the elementary, middle, and high school have been chosen for the Michigan Art Education Association's K-12 State Exhibition. More than 500 works on average are submitted annually from across the state of Michigan and adjudicated in a regional and state level selection process down to a group of 100 artworks featured in the Michigan K-12 State Exhibition.

Of the 100 finalists, jurors choose the Top 30 outstanding works to produce the Governor's Traveling Show. This collection of artworks tours venues around the state for one year until finally going on display in the Governor’s Executive Office in the state capitol in Lansing.

It is with great pride that I announce that NBHS junior, Amanda Jones, was chosen for the Governor's Top 30 Traveling Show for her mixed media artwork titled, "Self-Portrait!" Completed in her art class as part of a drawing unit inspired by Cubist portraits, Amanda drew overlapping portraits using graphite and watercolor. Presented by the Michigan Art Education Association, the Governor’s Traveling Show showcases the Top 30 works of high school art from across the state of Michigan.

Artist Statement: Self-Portrait, Amanda Jones (11th Grade)

"I drew fragments of myself from observation and distorted the space with an abstract composition. My self-portrait represents different versions of myself transitioning into each other within the inner thoughts of my subconscious. While creating this artwork, I also thought about how people who may have conflicting parts of the brain that self-sabotage them like stabbing yourself in the back."

After sharing the news with Amanda and photographing her with the drawing, her artwork will be transported to the Michigan Education Association headquarters in East Lansing where it will be prepared for the Governor's Top 30 Traveling Show to be featured in venues across the state from May 2022 to May 2023. Locations vary throughout the year.

New Buffalo Middle School's 7th Grade student, Cora Moser, was selected for the Top 100 artworks in the middle school division of the Michigan K-12 State Exhibition with two pieces with a dragon theme including a charcoal drawing and a ceramic sculpture.

Artist Statement: Hatching Dragon, Cora Moser (7th Grade)

"I thought of the idea of a dragon who had hatched out of a pumpkin and then built a nest inside of it. While the pumpkin itself is pretty simple and plain, it has become a home. I built the dragon to be proportionate with its pumpkin so that it can sit comfortably inside or next to it. I like my dragon and I think the pumpkin turned out really well. I have always loved dragons and enjoy drawing them as much as I can so I like that I was able to transform my drawings into a dragon sculpture."

Artist Statement: Charcoal Dragon 3.0, Cora Moser (7th Grade)

"I created the Dragon 3.0 when experimenting with sticks of charcoal. I smeared the charcoal on my fingers and made marks on paper. My charcoal smears reminded me a bit of the way I usually draw dragon wings. I draw dragons a lot because I like how I can create them in whatever way that I want from the basic outline of its main features. Dragons are usually cool no matter what."

"My artwork is all about Fall time. I used a foam plate, water, and markers to print my design of fall things. My favorite part is the lantern in the corner."

The Michigan Art Education Association produces the K-12 State Exhibition in the month of March as the annual observance of Youth Art Month designed by the Council for Art Education (CFAE) to emphasize the value of art education for all youth. Student exhibitions and public artworks raise awareness and support for the visual arts. It is an opportunity to connect with the community through young artists' creativity and illustrate the importance of fostering artistry and innovation.

Started in 1961, Youth Art Month exists to:

  1. Recognize art education as a viable factor in the total education curricular that develops citizens of a global society.

  2. Recognize art is a necessity for the full development of better quality of life for all.

  3. Direct attention to the value of art education for divergent and critical thinking.

  4. Expand art programs in schools and stimulate new art programs.

  5. Encourage commitment to the arts by students, community organizations, and individuals everywhere.

  6. Provide additional opportunities for individuals of all ages to participate in creative art learning.

  7. Increase community, business and governmental support for art education.

  8. Increase community understanding and interest in art and art education through involvement in art exhibits, workshops, and other creative ventures.

  9. Reflect and demonstrate the goals of the National Art Education Association that work toward the improvement of art education at all levels.

While Youth Art Month typically occurs in March, local and state events celebrating visual art education take place on almost a year round basis. Events and fundraisers take place in schools, libraries, art centers, museums, and even the state capitol building to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.

The New Buffalo Bison pride is strong with our representation of such talented young artists featured in the 2022 Michigan K-12 State Exhibition!
