The Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (RESA), Krasl Art Center, and the Box Factory of the Arts have once again combined forces to present the 2023 MS/HS Community Student Art Show featuring artwork from students in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties.

Out of over 20 schools, New Buffalo Middle/High School had 12 students with art work displayed in the show (5 MS students and 7 HS students).

As Berrien RESA winners, these students were awarded a $50.00 art scholarship to help them for further their art education. This can go towards private art lessons, art summer camps, group art classes at any of the local fine art centers/co-ops, or be designated toward the cost of a college studio art course.

Students from the Art Portfolio class took a field trip to the Box Factory of the Arts in St. Joseph, Michigan today to see the Community Student Art Show. Artists who have artwork in the show but are not currently taking Art Portfolio were also invited to attend.

We were greeted by Dani Davis, School and Community Programs Coordinator, from the Krasl Art Center who gave the students a docent-led tour of the exhibition. We learned that the Community Student Art Show has been a local tradition for over 30 years with a panel of 11 jurors who selected the award-winning artwork!

This was an an amazing opportunity for my students to see their work on display in a gallery alongside all the amazing artwork from area schools. Dani walked the group through the gallery describing how the jurors look for artwork that speaks to them and expresses personal student voice.

This was a proud art teacher moment for me to see my students viewing their artwork out in the community. During the tour, Ethan (12th Grade) took a moment to demonstrate how his piece, "The Big Catch" had an interactive element with a fish that leaps into the bear's mouth.

After the exhibition tour, my students had the opportunity to be guided through the Box Factory with artist, Elaine Harju, to show us where local artists create their work and offer community classes.

Elaine told us that the Box Factory of the Arts was originally established as the Williams Box Factory in 1900 by John Williams where "fancy boxes" were manufactured for monopoly board games, gifts, and other commercial products. She showed us the original furnace where they used coal to heat the building along with all three floors of studios and galleries.

We got a sneak peek from some artists who were working in their studios who stepped out to share with the students what they creating.

Elaine also showed us where they offer community art classes with a demonstration mirror and live model portrait sessions.

It was such an educational and rewarding experience for my students! I loved being able to share a local arts organization with my class and how it supports working artists in the community. I would like to thank our guides for giving us a tour of the exhibition and also this historical building where art continues to thrive. We are grateful to the administrators of New Buffalo Area Schools for supporting our students' talents through this community art show and school field trip. This was a one-of-a-kind experience!
