LET THE SHOW BEGIN!

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we proudly present...our very own New Buffalo artists featured in the Community Student Art Exhibition!

The Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (RESA), Krasl Art Center, and the Box Factory of the Arts have combined forces to present a community art show of elementary, middle, and high school students from Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties. All submitted works are being featured online at the 2021 Community Student Art Virtual Exhibition including 34 total New Buffalo Elementary pieces and 30 total pieces from New Buffalo Middle and High School.

Berrien RESA selected Cora Moser from New Buffalo Middle School and Camille Czech from New Buffalo High School for the in-person display at the Box Factory of the Arts from March 19th to April 25th, 2021 at 1101 Broad St., St. Joseph, Michigan with gallery hours open every Friday-Sunday from 12-4 pm.

New Buffalo Middle School's selected artist, Cora Moser (6th Grade), was recognized for her artwork titled, "Self-Portrait." She created a contour line drawing of her portrait in pencil that was blended with oil pastels for the natural highlights and shadows. The background was created with layers of tempera paint in strokes of blue, black, and violet before tearing the painting and rearranging the pieces into a mixed-media collage.

Camille Czech, (10th Grade), was chosen as the featured artist from New Buffalo High School for the exhibition at the Box Factory of the Arts. She composed a portrait of her dog titled, "Hazel," for a digital photography unit. She used Adobe Photoshop for some minor adjustments in the final black and white photograph. Her composition draws the viewer in to the focal point of the dog's gaze off into the distance in an almost heroic or regal demeanor.

As Berrien RESA winners, both students will receive a $50.00 art scholarship that is awarded to them for furthering their art education. This can go towards private art lessons, art summer camps, group art classes at any of the local fine art centers/co-ops, or be designated for taking a studio art course if the student is pursuing the visual arts in college.

A virtual awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 6:00 pm (Elementary) and 6:30 pm (Middle/High School) on the Krasl Art Center's YouTube channel with a livestream feed: 2021 Community Student Art Exhibition Virtual Reception.

I would like to thank the Krasl Art Center, Berrien RESA, the Box Factory of the Arts, and New Buffalo Area Schools for supporting our students' artistic talents. I am grateful for the opportunity to share their artwork with the community in this exhibition and celebrate their achievements both online and in the gallery setting.

In the words of a Renaissance man, Lister Sinclair:

"Art pulls together a community...it makes you feel differently. That's what artists are doing all the time, shifting and changing the way we see life."
