Lego Life

Brick by brick...my high school students found their inner child while building tiny lego structures in Art I class.

Students were each given a handle of colorful bricks to put together as a group, take apart, and build back up, rearranging into a 3-dimensional still life.

They really enjoyed collaborating on the build portion of their Lego Life project! Some people even brought in more of their own legos from home to add to their scene.

The creativity filled the room as groups experimented with various builds to create just the right still life for their Drawing unit.

Once their still life structures were complete, the students learned one and two-point perspective along with value shading.

Over the next few days, students drafted their compositions by observing the still life with an emphasis on drawing their legos in an exaggerated scale to fill the space.

Drawing with accurate perspective is a difficult skill to master in a beginning art class. My students really put the effort in to portray their lego builds as realistically as possible.

With careful consideration of light and shadow, students practiced their shading skills by layering colored pencils on their lego drawings.

Over time, their drawings started to take shape. The final pieces really showcase the progress my students are making in their developing drawing abilities.

My students enjoyed the process and even asked if we would have more lego projects coming up in the trimester! I was even excited to see a few students go one step further with adding an environment or lego people to their drawings because it showed that their artwork really meant something to them.

As their art teacher, it was great to see how they connected with the theme and with each other while learning drawing fundamentals along the way. Who knew that drawing legos could be so much fun?
