Jar of Imaginary Worlds

Title: A Jar of Fairies and Imps by a 6th Grade Student

What if you could save a specific moment in time inside of a glass jar that when opened, would lead through a portal into another world in a galaxy far far away? Like a secret message in a bottle, opening up this jar could reveal future adventures like sliding down the rabbit-hole into Wonderland!

New Buffalo Middle School students stretched their imaginations with this drawing challenge to create a little bit of magic just waiting to be discovered on the blank page. This prompt was an opportunity for my students to express their creativity the first week back from break in a new trimester.

Prior to drafting their ideas, students learned about copyright and plagiarism in Visual Art and how to demonstrate originality with their ideas. We started by defining what this means in journal reflections followed by a class discussion with visual examples in my 6th and 7th Grade Art classes.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Step 2: Drawing & Shading

Step 3: Self-Reflection Writing with Title and Artist Statement

Title: Underwater Adventure

Artist Statement: I made this artwork to show people that sometimes you have to go down deeper to find something beautiful.

Left to Right: The Moon Getting Stuck, Swimming in a Sea of Fireflies, and The Rocky Sea

Title: Space Jar

Artist Statement: I made a solar system that is being held together in the balance of the universe by a space squid who protects the planets.

Left to Right: Alien Slime, Fire at Sea, and Honey World

Title: The Tree of Hope

Artist Statement: This artwork is about all the hopes and dreams that we had when we were little. It's where all of those dreams you forgot about or gave up on are kept safe in a jar.

Left to Right: Floating Island Abduction, The World of Underwater Music, and The Evolution of Technology

Title: The Collector Collects a Jar of Worlds

Artist Statement:

World 071: When the world was collected, it was a happy world full of creatures but the collector decided to try experimenting on the world to bring creatures from different worlds into World 071. Everything was going fine until the Collector left the jar open and the real world's air was poisoned by the creatures with certain genes that turned people crazy. The creatures became bigger and stronger when entering the real world. Why collect the creatures? Since the creatures could enter Earth from the portals of other worlds, the Collector stopped them from causing chaos in the real world by putting them back in glass jars.
