Back to School in New Buffalo Art Dept. 2022-2023

Welcome back to another Bison school year! It's exciting to be wrapping up the first full week of school at New Buffalo Middle/High School. I have many returning students taking another art class this year and some fresh new faces ready to rock it out in the art room. This trimester I'm teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Art along with Art I and Art Exploration with my high school students. I'd like to share an overview of their projects as much of this artwork is in the early stages this week.

Name Designs: (Grades 6-12)

The first day of school in all my classes students design the name tag that marks where their sketchbooks and artwork are stored in the room.

High School:

My students hit the ground running with amazing ideas of what matters to them by finding sources from recycled magazines combined with their choice of materials in pencil shading, oil pastel, sharpie, watercolor, or tempera paint. It's amazing how much these artworks change each day as they develop into final concepts.

Left to Right: "The Queen of Celebrities" and "That was Then" (A time capsule of vintage culture)

Above: "The Heart Landscape"

Themes: "Let Make Waves" and Ocean Pollution

Themes: Science/Tech vs. Humanity and the Pressures on High School Students

Art Exploration:

I have students at all levels of experience in Art Exploration from just starting out in the next art class after taking Art I their freshman year to students who have had several art classes over the last three years and took the Advanced Art class last trimester. We jumped right into drawing portraits taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso's abstractions in portrait drawing with blind contour exercises and continuous lines to free up any insecurities and learn to take creative risks in the process. I am so proud of their bravery and progress!
