2022 Community Student Art Exhibition

New Buffalo artists Nicky Durham (9th Grade) and Lieve Siewert (8th Grade) were chosen for the Berrien RESA Community Art Scholarship Award at the 2022 Community Student Art Exhibition. The Berrien Regional Education Service Agency, Krasl Art Center, and the Box Factory of the Arts collaborate each year to present a community art show of elementary, middle, and high school students from Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties.

All submitted works of art have been featured online at the 2022 Middle and High School Student Art Exhibition and were displayed at the Box Factory of the Arts including the additional pieces from New Buffalo artists featured below:

Alex Schaffer (9th Grade) "Deforestation at its Worst!"

Collaborative Sculpture "Snoopy" by Ella Dohner (10th Grade), Alice Morris (9th Grade), and Benita Puskunigis (9th Grade)

Shaun Ludwig (7th Grade) "Charcoal Magic"

Michael Kuhn (7th Grade) "Happy Cake!"

Berrien RESA awarded Lieve Siewert (8th Grade) for her watercolor self-portrait titled "The Heart and the Soul."

Lieve composed her self-portrait in profile with imagery representing her identity within the silhouette. The drawing was rendered with pen & ink and blended in watercolor values. She included a beating heart in the center of her composition to represent the core of her being with all of the aspects of her life surrounding it.

Nicky Durham (9th Grade) was also selected for a Berrien RESA award for her ceramic piece titled, "Stitches."

Nicky created this figurative sculpture in terracotta clay as a cat propping up to look up out at the world. She took careful consideration to add details on all sides and carve out the interior for firing. The cat is named "Stitches" to represent the stitches carved across its face. There is almost a life-like human quality to the demeanor of this cat's expression.

As Berrien RESA winners, both students will receive a $50.00 art scholarship that is awarded to them for furthering their art education. This can go towards private art lessons, art summer camps, group art classes at any of the local fine art centers/co-ops, or be designated for taking a studio art course if the student is pursuing the visual arts in college.

The awards ceremony can be viewed on the Krasl Art Center's YouTube channel here: 2022 Middle & High School Student Show - Awards Ceremony

I am proud of my students receiving this recognition and grateful for the opportunity to share their artwork with the community!
